[Wed Aug 14 17:48:00 2002] : (8) Mikal: Background in Progress: Phyxagh was born in the Underdark of Abeir-Toril, where he was taken under the "wing" of House Baenduis guard. He was a naturally adept in the uses of Drow fighting styles, possessing a powerful natural dexterity and skill with the sword. He was taught the Draa Velve, Sargh'elgg, and Ust Sreen styles of fighting, which he constantly practices in an attempt to master them.

Ust Sreen: The simple combat style called ust sreen, which means "first danger," emphasizes fast reactions to the appearance of enemies. Because vigilance is a constant state in drow society, this is normally a basic series of lessons taught at drow academies and is usually combined with another style, since fast reflexes aren't terribly useful when not backed up by other skills. Normally at least one drow trained in this style is present in any scouting group and carries a hand crossbow loaded with sleep poison to eliminate one opponent early before the drow's allies can react.

Sargh'elgg: The sargh'elgg style has simple elements but requires extensive training to master. It is used with light weapons or the traditional drow rapier, and it is designed to get the most out of these weapons and the naturally superior dark elf dexterity. The name means "valor in slaying," which is an overly-inflated title created to give some measure of confidence to those whose poor skills leave this as their only choice. Some martially-minded sorcerers and wizards learn the basics of this style, and because Kiaransalee, Lolth, and Vhaeraun all have favored weapons suitable for the sargh'elgg, it is practiced by many clerics as well. This is the most common fighting style used by a typical low-rank drow guard. (Essentially, that's anyone with no more than the standard amount of training given to a dark elf common soldier.)

Draa Velve: Only a few dark elves in each city practice the draa velve style because the natural ability needed for this style is very rare. The name means "two sword," and it involves an amazing balance of control between the two hands. Followers of this style fight with a weapon in each hand and use one of the weapons to parry as well as attack, which means the parrying weapon also acts much like a shield. Some dark elves without perfect balance in both hands study the basics of this style, hoping to eventually master it through intense training or magic. Drizzt Do'Urden is a master of this style since he has the natural talent and also because he received training by a house weapon master.

Once Phyxagh was trained and sent out to patrol the Underdark, he saw his chance to leave the hated Matriarchal society. He singlehandedly killed his patrol of other Drow, and escaped to the surface! This was almost 30 years ago.

His first meeting of human's was an unfortunate one. He was quickly recruited by the Night Mask thieves guild in Waterdeep as an enforcer and assassin. While there he quickly learned of different ways and different styles then violence and death. He stayed with the Night Masks for 2 years, trying to think of a good way to escape their clutches, knowing if he tried to just leave he would be quickly hunted down and killed. His oppruntunity came one day when he and a few other members of the Night Masks came upon a Drow raiding party, carrying some slaves who the Night Masks meant to acquire for themselves. Phyxagh killed first the Drow raiding party, and then killed the members of the Night Masks. He disguised one of the Drow corpses as his own, and took some clothing from a dead Night Mask. He then freed the human and dwarven slaves, and ran off into the wilderness....

He stayed in the woods near the Dalelands for over 10 years, trying to figure out how best to live a "peaceful" life when he heard sounds of battle, along with Drow arrow's being fired from crossbows! As he went to investigate he saw a group of adventurers being harrassed by a Drow party. The battle was going against the adventurers and Phyxagh knew he had to act. He leaped wildly into the fray, and, with his help, the adventurers prevailed. Phyxagh introduced himself, and the others, so impressed with his skills, immediatly asked him to join them! (after a subtle alignment spell cast by the wizard to make sure that Phyxagh wasn't evil.) Phyxagh and the other's went through many adventurers, which ultimatly cultivated 5 years ago with the wizard wanting to head to the mysterious "planes". While only the wizard, Phyxagh, and an archer were the only members of the original party left, a paladin named Kernus and a priest of Lathander named Kal joined the group, who helped the wizard find components to create a permenant Gate to a place known as Sigil... This took over a year, but eventually the group made their way to Sigil, a large city with every type of being imagineable, and a gate to every plane and world in the known universe.

Phyxagh and members of the group traveled to many places over the next 8 years... including battling Devils while diabolic fireballs smashed their way across the sky in Avernus, and battling through an entire layer of the Abyss, which strangly enough was confined within the finite space of a boat which traveled the River Styx! He had traveled to the strange and Elemental Plane of Air, and battled Etheral and Astral creatures in their own homes. Phyxagh learned many things about the Planes during this time, including the devil's weakness for silver and lightening and the demons' weakness of Cold wrought Iron. He caught glimpses of worlds where little Kender make lives miserable and a hellish wasteland of blasted sand and Lich Kings... He eventually grew homesick, and, after biding goodbye to his Planeswalking friends, decided to go back through the gate of Sigil and head back to Abeir-Toril. When he came back he found out something quite interesting.. another Drow had made his way into the world, and was fighting against his brethern. A swordsmaster named Drizzit Do'Urden. He recognized him as the son of the greatest warrior he had ever known, and was impressed by the younger Drow's decision to leave the Underdark. With this knowledge in hand he became a crusader, fighting against evil humans such as the Zhentarim and darker threats, such as vampires and devils come to plauge the world. While he still finds time to contact his friends on the planes and even help them out, he spends much of his time back on Toril, where he uses his knowledge of evil Outsiders to stop them from making inroads against his chosen home.

The only sign on the building is a finely painted picture of a wine bottle and a cup- the standard symbol for a wine shop in Tarabon, if displayed a little more discretely than usual. The woman enters the building.
